The West Orange Health Department is offering Colorectal Exam Kits for West Orange residents age 50 and older for $1.00 through the West Orange Health Center located in the John P. Renna, Jr. House at 10 Gaston St. in West Orange.
Colorectal cancer usually affects people over the age of 50. Between 1998 and 2002, an average of 463 cases were diagnosed per year in Essex County, resulting in 167 deaths (www.cancercontrolplanet.cancer.gov). This is the third most common type of cancer for both men and women in the United States. It can also be detected in its early stages when the probability of cure is good.
This take-home fecal occult blood test card is a simple test that checks for hidden blood in the stool which can be a sign of cancer.
