In Memory: Brendan T. Byrne
Brendan T. Byrne, a former two-term governor who called West Orange, NJ home, died Thursday, Jan. 4. He was 93.

Gov. Byrne was born April 1, 1924 at Orange Memorial Hospital and grew up on Prospect Place off Main Street in West Orange. One of New Jersey’s most affable politicians, he served as the state’s 47th governor from 1974 to 1982. Gov. Byrne attended Washington School and graduated from West Orange High School in 1942. His father, Francis Byrne, was a former West Orange Police Commissioner. A veteran of World War II, he graduated from Princeton in 1949 and Harvard Law School in 1951.

"I have always fondly remembered my hometown wherever I was and whatever I was doing,” Byrne told Township Historian Joseph Fagan in a 2010 interview.

We will remember him fondly. His passing is of great loss to West Orange, where his quiet dedication will be greatly missed.
