STATEMENT RE: LEGIONELLA TESTING/REMEDIATION (9/27/2018)

The Township of West Orange has completed testing of all municipal facilities' water systems for Legionella bacteria and installed filters in those buildings that tested positive back in July and August of this year. These filtering systems are made to prevent any bacteria from entering the water. All buildings have been remediated by super chlorination and flushing that was performed by an environmental consulting firm with expertise in Legionella.

The West Orange Dept. of Health will continue to work with the West Orange Board of Education and School Administration to remedy the traces of Legionella that were recently identified within several of the public school buildings.

There have been no additional reported cases of Legionella disease to the West Orange Health Department, as required by the State Department of Health.

According to New Jersey American Water Company (NJAWC), the drinking water they deliver is treated and meets all federal and state water quality standards and requirements. That said, the quality of that water can change once it leaves their pipes and enters domestic plumbing systems. The West Orange Dept. of Health has been in constant communication with NJAWC throughout this remedial process.

Please be reminded that Legionella is contracted by breathing in aerosolized mist or water containing the bacteria. It cannot be contracted by drinking water or touching water and is not contagious from person to person. The main ways that a person may get Legionella is by breathing in water from a shower, a decorative fountain or cooling tower. Additionally, a person with a compromised immune system may be more likely to get the illness before a healthier person. Legionella is a Pneumonia type illness and symptoms should be discussed with the family physician.

The health & well-being of all residents are our top priority. We take this situation very seriously and will continue working until remedied. If you have any questions. please contact the West Orange Dept. of Health at (973) 325-4120
