Traffic Bureau

About the Traffic Bureau

The West Orange Police Department's Traffic Bureau deals with the multitude of traffic issues that affect the safety and movement of traffic on our municipal, county and state roadways. The Traffic Bureau conducts various traffic related research and planning projects for the Township. We also provide technical assistance and statistical data to the West Orange Engineering and Essex County Engineering Departments relative to any proposed enhancements to the road system. We also provide technical review assistance to the West Orange Planning and Zoning Boards relative to pre-existing and new construction projects within the Township that may impact traffic.

Along with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the Traffic Bureau conducts technical investigations for serious crashes and those that involve fatalities. "Hit and Run" crashes are investigated to the fullest extent to identify and bring to justice those persons responsible.

We also promote safety for pedestrians, pedacyclists, and the motoring public through safety campaigns including, but not limited to, State funded Safe Routes to School, Driving While Intoxicated, and Pedestrian Safety programs.

School Crossing Guards are administered by the Traffic Bureau with regular annual surveys to assess the needs of our school children and to ensure optimum placement.
